A dozen games into the tournament and we’ve witnessed a 3rd highest run chase, 3rd ever Super over & PNG taking Windies’ 137 run chase till 19th and above all the Super Upset of the tournament USA defeating Pakistan in Super over, With 9 non-test playing nations and 28 games more to go another upset of the same level can be expected. Hence, fans should not keep their eyes away from any fixture irrespective of the on-paper strength of side. This brings us to the game no. 13, where Ireland faces Canada.

Ireland, who came into this tournament as a middle ranked team is placed in a critical group alongside Pakistan and India. They’re not expected to qualify for Super 8 but an expectation for taking the qualification scenarios of this group to the last game can be made. In order to do so, they must win their games against USA & Canada.

Canada on the other hand felt the wrath of the USA’s clinical batting at Dallas in what was the first game of the tournament.

The 24-years-young left-arm pace sensation from Ireland has now raised a name that attracts expectations. Little holds a large capability to run through batting lineups in a matter of spell.

As cricket moves to Texas, match no. 11 will take place between one of the best bowling units of this tournament. Pakistan will take on the co-host USA, which is coming with a winning momentum after thrashing Canada in a high-scoring encounter. Pakistan will look to start with a win before playing against the archrivals on 9 June.

Pakistan

Pakistan team, on paper, looks excellent, especially when you have the likes of Naseem, Shaheen, Amir, and Rauf in a single team with a smart bowler like Imad Wasim and T20 specialist Shadab Khan.

The problem for Pakistan will be the batting and leadership issues that they have been through before the tournament. Earlier, Shaheen Shah was leading the team after the World Cup 2023 as Babar Azam gave up captaincy in all three formats.

From then to now, it’s been a tough time for Pakistan as they drew a series at home against a second-string New Zealand side, got defeated against Ireland, and lost 2-0 in England. Rizwan and Babar will be key run accumulators for them.

USA

The United States of America, or simply the USA, is an associate nation that is currently an emerging cricketing nation. It is also the host of WT20 2024.

The USA qualified as the host nation and recently defeated a test-playing nation, Bangladesh, in a T20 series, a very surprising upset. Recently, the opener of the world T20 was also dominated by them; the USA has proved that you cannot take any opposition lightly in T20 cricket.

USA star batter Aaron Jones took the limelight in that match after scoring an explosive 94* off 40 balls with 10 sixes, along with his partnership with Gous. We all know that Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand white-ball specialist, also plays for this team. Anderson once held the record for the fastest ODI century, which was bettered by Ab de Villiers later. Captain Monk Patel and T20 league regular Ali Khan will also be the key for the USA.

This match will take place at Texas’ Grand Prairie Stadium. Canada and the USA played a high-scoring game here, with the United States of America chasing 195 quite comfortably. Inconsistent bounce can trouble the batters, and we can expect the powerplay to help the seamers a bit.

Pacers are more likely to dominate here, whereas batsmen will look to target the shorter square boundaries. Using the pitch with cutters and slower ones outside off can be a good option if executed well.

Afridi will form a good pair with Naseem.

Aaron Jones: The USA hard hitter will be the best bet for them as he has scored the most runs after Surya Kumar Yadav in T20 cricket in the last 12 months, averaging around 50 with an SR of 150. His hitting vs. spin will be the critical factor in countering Shadab or any other spinner that comes in front of him.

Oman

Mehran Khan

The biggest positive from Oman’s first game of the tournament was Mehran Khan. He bowled the 18th and 20th overs, in which he gave just 8 runs (of which 5 were extras). Three runs in the final two overs and just 7 from the quota of 3 overs while taking 3 wickets is just phenomenal. Mehran Khan will be the most important aspect as Oman needs to stop Australia from achieving a big score or prevent them from chasing the desired total.

As we move to match no. 9 of WT20 2024, Uganda will take on Papua New Guinea at Providence Stadium, Guyana. Uganda is coming from a horror show in which they got bundled for just 58 against Afghanistan. PNG, on the other hand, is coming from a good match vs. the Windies. PNG and Uganda have met each other once in T20is, in which Uganda came over top by 4 runs. Uganda will look to fight back hard, and PNG will also look to climb up the points table.

Papua New Guinea

When they came into the tournament, PNG was seen as an underprepared or underconfident team, but when they played their first game against the Windies in Guyana, they surprised many out here as they brought the Windies close in the game.

As PNG made an average total batting first, people thought it would be a cakewalk for the West Indies, but things changed, and PNG dragged it till the 18th over, so much so that the required run rate reached over 12. Hopefully, they will display the same skill set again.

Captain Assad Vala will hope that his side takes positives from their last match and comes back hard for this encounter.

Uganda

Uganda, as expected, started the tournament as a comparatively weak side, but the expectations were that at least they would give some fight to Afghanistan. Instead, they suffered a big blow to their net run rate by getting 58 all out in the second innings, chasing a big total, and losing the game by 125 runs.

Brian Masaba and the team looked out of sorts in the game, failing in both the batting and bowling departments. Hopefully, they will give some fight, and in T20 cricket, we all know anything can happen, so they might also hope for a win. Fielding will be the key here, as both teams have average fielding units as per the international standards, but the one who converts half chances will be better placed.

Netherlands

A team that impressed everyone in the latest ODI WC despite finishing bottom of the table, the Dutch have been on a meteoric rise ever since 2022 despite the retirement of several stars preceding this period.

Gaining automatic qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup through a 4th place finish in the group stage in the last edition, the Netherlands have played in only 2 more series since then, with both of them being tri-nation tournaments. Although they finished last in the latest one which included fellow European teams, Ireland and Scotland, Edward’s men aren’t the group of men to back down from challenges.

The squad has been weakened with the absence of Roelof Van Der Merwe and Colin Ackermann, both of them being unavailable due to county duties. Thus, the load increases on fellow all-rounders such as Logan Van Beek and Bas De Leede to provide utility in both departments.

Nepal

A team whose fans possess an inspiring amount of passion towards the game, the Nepalese National hasn’t been able to do full justice to this adulation, though they have returned to the T20 World Cup by defeating UAE in the Asian Qualifiers and will hope they do something to cheer for back home.

The year 2024 hasn’t been a welcoming one for them so far. Facing losses in each of the series they took part in, they faced consecutive losses to the non-participating side, Hong Kong, and were battered by fellow participants, Papua New Guinea, in one of the other games. On top of that, they will be missing the services of arguably their nation’s best cricketer, Sandeep Lamichanne, due to his US visa being denied. Like their opponents, they also carry an abundance of all-rounders with them, though their spin department might be rendered less effective on the grounds of the USA.

Afghanistan is surely the favourites in the game against Uganda. Their opener, Gurbaz, is coming after playing a match-winning role for KKR in the finals, and their spin bowling department is second to none. They also have a good all-rounder in Azmatullah Omarzai.

Uganda

Winning 41 games in the last 49 T20Is, Uganda is the in-form team with a win percentage of 83.67%. They defeated Rwanda in their final regional match and were the best African team alongside Namibia in the tournament. They are currently the least talked about side in their group but might surprise everyone by winning one game or two.

This team has some talent in the form of Riazat Ali Shah and Frank Nsubuga, who is currently 43 years old and the oldest player playing in the tournament. Also, Alpesh Rajmani came into the limelight after taking the most T20I wickets last year (55) and being nominated for the T20I Cricketer of the Year award.

Uganda defeated Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifiers, and Riazat Ali Shah was the star of the match. He performed with both bat and ball and was the player of the match in that game. First match here, and it’s South Africa taking on Sri Lanka. In an international tournament, a team can expect 3 kinds of starters:

  1. an absolutely easy game that can feel like a warmup
  2. a rivalry game
  3. a confusing, tough game with probably nothing to gain but everything to lose.

One of these teams is a very successful side, having played 3 T20 WC finals and winning one, while the other has only made it to 2 Semifinals in 8 tournaments.

Despite being the later, going into this match, Proteas will find themselves in #3 scenario. But what about Lankans? A historic force in this tournament finds themselves nowhere in expectations. The game is expected to be heavily dominated by the Green & Golds, or maybe the big-mouth Protea fan should respect the highly talented Lankan pace attack and their newly appointed captain, all-rounder Wanidu Hasranga.

The Nassau County surface hosted India v/s Bangladesh warmup match proving to be an uneven bounce surface with good help for fast bowlers.

The surface being new and dropped in under the supervision of Adelaide Oval’s pitch curator, Damian Hough, tells a lot about what can be expected. With pace and bounce being obvious features, the ground’s shortest boundary lies at 60m and longest at 82, making it of a size similar to Wankhede, Mumbai.

After making his debut in July 2022, Stubbs had a breakout SA20 and then IPL within the first five months of 2024. Stubbs has had enough performances to make fans believe that he can lit up the stage in the USA and Caribbean this summer. If the obvious comes true, Stubbs’s journey for an all-timer campaign should start on Monday itself.

Ottniel Baartman

South Africa is expected to do well in this T20 World Cup, but they are not the clear favourites. The reason being their flawed bowling which has had problems in the death. The bridge between “doing well” & “coming out as champions” will require a 5’10 strongly built Baartman to do what he did with Eastern Capes.

The pacer has all the armour in his artillery to gun down even the best batters in the world. New York’s uneven bounce track and an opponent side from the subcontinent provide Ottniel with a chance to perfect his start to the tournament.
